Stephen’s latest novel, The Art of Being Dead, was published in 2008 by Bluemoose Books, and can be bought from their web-site (see links), from Waterstones, from most good independent bookshops or from Amazon.
The ‘death’ we are talking about here is not an actual death, but a spiritual, emotional and sexual death, as exemplified by the main character Jonathan. Due to various incidents in his childhood and youth, Jonathan attempts to live his life as a spectator, separate and distant from the rest of society. Eventually and, some might say, inevitably, this way of living is challenged, and in a most cruel and brutal way. The book is concerned with Jonathan’s response and how, once a decision to become involved has been taken, the consequences seem to take on a tragic and unstoppable life of their own. As it says on the book jacket: can you become a murderer by doing nothing?
Stephen is working on the next novel, which will probably take another year or so before being completed. Watch this space!
