Music

Jim Milne and Steve Clayton, aka Tractor, in the 1970s.

Steve started playing the drums at the age of nine, when his older brother decided that he should learn to drum and join his band. By the time he was eleven he was playing regularly at dances and working men’s clubs. He formed the band The Way we Live with  school friends, and dropped out of school at seventeen to concentrate on music, writing and painting; anything, in fact, to avoid doing a real job. The band signed a five album contract with John Peel’s Dandelion Label and released an album “A Candle for Judith”.

On John Peel’s suggestion the band changed its name to Tractor, and over the next three years played extensively on the university and concert circuit. Tractor released various singles, and in 1972 released an eponymous album, which received much critical acclaim and airplay, achieving success in UK record charts and continuing popularity in European charts. Over the subsequent years they continued to perform (including the Glastonbury Festival in 2003), touring with Spaceritual.net, comprising many of the original Hawkwind members  in 2004/5, and to record, releasing three further albums in 1991, 1993 and 1998.
